Help Change the Lives of Farm Animals

There are billions of animals suffering on industrial farms, spending their entire lives confined without fresh air or sunlight, can you imagine that?  I agree with WSPA wholeheartedly that "animal friendly farming is better for animals, people and the planet".

The United Nations 2012 Earth Summit in Rio is the most significant global discussion on the planet's future, we need to ensure that H.E. Dr. John W. Ashe and H. E. Mr. Sook Kim (Co-chairs) are aware that the well being of farm animals need to be included on the agenda in the hope that this can influence the delegates who are attending on our behalf.

Please click here to be directed to a ready prepared letter to Dr. Ashe and Mr. Kim, enter a few details and hit submit.

The lovely singer Leona Lewis posted the new WSPA campaign on her Facebook page and Blog last week, I hadn't heard about the Earth Summit until she mentioned it.  I love how she uses her high profile to raise awareness for the plight of animals around the world, you can really see how genuine her love of animals is and with Leona's millions of fans she will really be able to make waves!

Call for honest food labelling

Source: CIWF
CIWF reports that more than 80% of the animals raised in the EU every year are factory farmed.  The cruel factory farming practices are often hidden from the public view.

CIWF, RSPCA, WSPA and the Soil Association have come together as a partnership and are campaigning for consumers to be able to choose higher animal welfare foods and demand a method of production labelling on all meat and dairy products sold in the EU.  They believe that all foods should be labelled honestly so we know where food comes from and how it is farmed.  Even though it is a big thing to ask, it is possible.  For example, eggs produced in the EU must be labelled with their production method so that customers can decided on the type of farming they wish to support.

The campaign will be officially launched later on this year but if you are a UK resident you can help now by clicking here and contacting your MEP and adding a few details to the readily prepared message explaining that you have a right to know where your food comes from and asking them to support the campaign calling for method of production labelling to be extended to all meat and dairy products.

Help Crack down on Wildlife Crime in London

Source: WSPA
The beautiful tiger cub above would have been around 10 days old when it was killed and stuffed.  Instead of living the life it deserved, the cub's destiny was a mantelpiece in London.

London is an important hub for the illegal wildlife trade, WSPA describes it as being "a shop window on the world of wildlife crime".  When the new London Mayor is elected in a few months time there will much for them to do including policing the wildlife crime that is so rife in the city, this needs to be tackled in order to close down the marketplace for the whole of the UK.

As being put in charge of one of the biggest cities in the world, the future Mayor needs to seriously commit to resourcing London's specialist wildlife police in order to crack down wildlife crime on the streets which leads to saving animals in the wild and putting criminals in jail.

Please click here to remind the new Mayor of London that the world is watching and to ask them to take the concerns of people in the UK into account and commit to cracking down wildlife crime and saving animals in the wild.  Simply enter a few details and your name will be added to the readily prepared open letter.

Save Chilean Sea Lions from Needless Slaughter

WSPA reports that sea lions in Chilean waters are in dire need of our help to protect them from needless slaughter.

Sea lions are protected species in Chile, however, the Government is attempting to use loopholes in current legalisation to begin a mass cull as they are blaming the sea lions for the scarcity of fish in Chilean waters.  It is not sea lions to blame but decades of overfishing.  The Government are ignoring this factor as well as vehement opposition from the people of Chile.

Without protection, thousands of sea lions will be culled, many will be exposed to further exploitation such as a life in captivity "performing" in aquariums and zoos and others are at risk of having their body parts exported to Asia for use in "aphrodisiac medicines".

End Live Animal Exports from Australia

The cruelty of Australia's live cattle export trade to Indonesia has recently being exposed leading to a review by RSPCA Australia.  For more information on this please click here.

Australia exports hundreds of thousands of cattle, mostly to Indonesia and roughly 4 million sheep to the Middle East, yearly.

Following pressure from members of the public, the Australian government announced a temporary suspension of all live cattle exports to Indonesia.  However, after just five weeks it was announced that the live trade can resume.  WSPA has said "we need to let the Australian government know that this cruelty is not acceptable and that their actions are being watched internationally."

Please click here to see how you can voice your support along with the thousands of Australians who have already taken action.

QUICK! Less than 36 hours to make a difference.

On Thursday 23rd June, backbench MPs have forced a debate in the House of Commons on circuses which is very likely to be followed by a vote.  This comes after Government's recent decision not to introduce a total ban on wild animals being used in circuses and to introduce a licensing system instead.

If the MP's do back a ban on the use of wild animals in cirucses it doesn't mean it will automatically be passed as a law BUT it will increase the level of pressure on the Government.

How to help

Please can you spare a minute to click here in order to write to your MP asking them to attend the debate and vote to ban the use of wild animals in circuses?  All you need to do is click, enter a few details and WSPA will do the rest of the work for you.  If you do have time to add your views to the readily prepared e-mail it would be really great.

If you have some more time to spare, WSPA is supporting The Independent newspapers campaign asking for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.  Add your name to their petition here and please don't forget to spread the word.

Spotlight on Leona Lewis

Last night I went to see Leona Lewis, the 2006 winner of X Factor and a long time heroine of mine. Not only has she got a beautiful voice and masses of talent but she is a shy yet strong, unassuming, modest woman with a fierce love for animals. The show was fantastic and at the beginning it featured a video of her on a beautiful white horse which was just stunning.

An example of Leona's conscience and love of animals was highlighted perfectly back in October 2008 when Mohamed Al Fayed offered her $1 million to open the Harrods sale. Leona turned down this offer because Harrods stocks clothes made from real animal fur. She later told The Big Issue magazine "I got a lot of flak for that. There were people who said I should have done it and given the money to charity, but that would have been such a contradiction."

Leona was PETA's Person of the Year in 2008 and also a supporter of World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).
