Thank you Russia, on behalf of the Harp Seals

The Canadian seal slaughter will begin in a matter of weeks.  However, there is some good news... the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Belarus recently passed a historic ban on the trade of harp seal fur which is the main product of the seal slaughter.  Russia was a primary market for seal products and an order for 100,000 baby seal skins has been cancelled!  The drop in demand means we are a step closer to ending the annual seal slaughter for good.

Unfortunately, the Canadian government vows to reverse the ban through diplomatic pressure which leaves hundreds of thousands of baby seals at risk of being shot or clubbed to death.

This means the future of the ban hangs in the balance and it is vital that we commend the leaders in Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus for enforcing the ban and asking them not to give into pressure from the Canadian government.  Please click here and spend a moment adding your details to the readily prepared correspondence.

If you have time, please click here and add your details in order to contact the Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper and ask him to call of this years cull.

Finally, it will only take a minute to add your name to PETA's petition here.

Happy News from WWF!

Source: Pinterest.
Last month there was news of increased rhino numbers in Nepal, and tigers on the way back to central Asia.
The latest rhino census shows there are almost 100 more one-horned rhinos than in 2008.
On top of the recent improved figures from India, tigers are now set to return to central Asia for the first time in 40 years. WWF have come up with a plan along with the government of Kazakhstan, to relocate some Russian Amur tigers (which are genetically identical to central Asia's extinct Turan tiger) to suitable areas in Kazakhstan.

Help Animals in Russia

In Russia there is no law regarding animal protection.  After a recent video showing members of the Russian Army abusing a dog, concerned citizens of Russia have been inspired to take a stand.  Complaints about the abuse have been filed but justice has not been served due to lack of legislation.

How to Help

A petition has been created, addressing Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, asking the Russian authorities to pass legislation to protect animals.  Please spare a moment to sign it here. (Warning, if you read the full description of the petition there is some disturbing accounts of abuse towards animals so you may want to skip this part - like I did - if you find it difficult)  The goal is 50,000 signatures and they are well on the way but need to reach that target to make a difference.

Please tell your friends to sign this as well as it really will make a difference.
